Crop Developments Highlight Spillman Field Day
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Research on specialty barleys, a new tall red winter wheat and updates on karnal bunt will be highlighted Thursday, July 11, at the annual field day of Washington State University's Spillman Agronomy Farm.
Other stops on the half-day tour of research plots include: work to breed a new footrot-resistant semi-dwarf club wheat; efforts to develop Hessian fly-resistant spring wheats; progress in developing new large-seeded lentils, peas and chickpeas; and new types of dry peas.
Researchers also will update growers on the status of rust diseases and discuss the effect of chloride on physiologic leaf spot disease of wheat.
Registration begins at 8 a.m.. Tours will begin at 9 a.m.. Peter Goldmark, WSU regent and former director of the Washington State Department of Agriculture, will be the featured noon speaker at a no-host, catered lunch.
The farm is located about two miles south of Pullman on Johnson Road. Pesticide recertification credits for Washington have been requested.
