Conference on Aging and Health Oct. 14

PULLMAN, Wash. -- "Aging: It's Not for Sissies!," a one-day conference for professionals who work with senior citizens, is scheduled Oct. 14 at the University Inn Best Western, in Moscow, Idaho.

"This is one of the few in-service training opportunities available for Inland Empire professionals who work with older adults," said Marlene Garrison, one of the event's planners.  "It also attracts a small number of seniors who wish to expand their knowledge on current gerontology issues."

In three morning presentations, speakers will talk about the biochemistry of aging, understanding proper medication use by elders and the new U.S. Department of Agriculture national health initiative and health education resources available through Cooperative Extension.

In four concurrent sessions in the afternoon that will be repeated once, speakers will discuss legal and financial issues of aging families; fraud and the elderly; aging feet, and mental health issues of the elderly.

In a separate two-hour workshop at the University of Idaho Technology Laboratory, which will be repeated, seniors can learn how to talk with their grandchildren by e-mail and visit companies and organizations through a computer.

Registration for the entire day is $40 and includes lunch.  College or university students can register for $5.  Lunch and the lab are not included. People interested in the lab alone can register for $5.

To register or for more information, contact the Cooperative Extension Conference Planning Service at (509) 335-2921 or contact by e- mail at cecps@cahe.wsu.edu.

The conference is being co-sponsored by Washington State University and the University of Idaho Cooperative Extension Services.
