Dairy Group Honors WSU Scientist

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Professional Dairy Heifer Growers Association has created an award in honor of a Washington State University faculty member who is the award's first recipient.

Roger Cady, who works at the WSU Puyallup Research & Extension Center, was honored for outstanding achievement in the dairy heifer industry.  He was cited for his ability to envision a need for industry solutions in the early stages of a problem and to establish effective programs.

"Dr. Cady has had a phenomenal impact on the dairy industry and dairy education," said Quinn.  "Few individuals have had as great an impact in so short a time as he has."

Cady is credited with galvanizing support among growers, dairy producers, and affiliated industry and university professionals for an organization that would represent the needs of the new heifer growing industry.

His work led to financial support for the first National Heifer Growers meeting in Atlanta, Ga., in 1997.

The scientist helped establish Dairy-L, an Internet discussion list through which dairy producers, veterinarians, students and other professionals discuss current industry issues.  His work has been recognized by other organizations, including the American Dairy Science Association which honored Cady with its Alfa Laval Agri Dairy Extension Award in 1998.

The action came at the association's recent meeting in Bloomington, Minn.  Association President Mark Quinn said the future Cady Awards will be given only to those who make contributions that have lasting meaning for the industry.
