Joint Farm Field Day Scheduled July 8
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Eleven research programs will be highlighted during the joint field day of the USDA Agricultural Research Service Palouse Conservation Field Station and Washington State University's Spillman Agronomy Farm on Thursday, July 8.
Registration starts at 8 a.m. at the Palouse Conservation Field Station with field tours beginning at 8:30 a.m. Farmers will hear about research on crop choices and management strategies for direct seeding into heavy residues; tillage and residue management effects on jointed goatgrass establishment; transgenic biocontrol of soil-borne root diseases; managing soil pH under direct seeding, and management effects on soil microbes, soil carbon and global climate change.
A hosted lunch will be served at noon at the Spillman Agronomy Farm. Judy Olson, eastern Washington representative for U.S. Senator Patty Murray, is the scheduled speaker.
Olson, who farms near Oakesdale, is past president of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers and National Association of Wheat Growers.
Afternoon field tours at the Spillman Farm are scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Farmers will see crop breeding developments in winter and spring varieties of wheat, barley, pea, lentil and spring chickpeas.
The Conservation Station is located 1.5 miles north of Pullman on Hwy 27, then a half mile west on the Albion Road. The Spillman Agronomy Farm is located two miles south of Pullman on Johnson Road.
Credits have been requested for state pesticide applicator recertification and Certified Crop Adviser continuing education.
