Pelter Receives Morrison Award

PULLMAN, Wash. -- Gary Q. Pelter, Washington State University Grant- Adams area extension educator, was named the 17th recipient of the Kenneth J. Morrison Award in Agronomy and Soils Thursday at the Direct Seed Cropping Systems Research field day at the Palouse Conservation Field Station.

The award honors WSU extension faculty for significant contributions to agronomic crop production and soil management.

Pelter has served as production and management educator for the vegetable and vegetable seed industry in Grant and Adams counties for 24 years and has played an important role in establishing and maintaining a processing vegetable industry in the Columbia Basin, according to John L. Kugler, WSU Grant-Adams area extension educator.

"Gary's professional attitude and energy have generated admiration and respect from growers, industry and the international community," Kugler wrote in his nomination of Pelter. "What impresses me most is the manner in which he has helped build growers and industry organizations, taught leadership by example and then let the leaders take charge and move ahead."

The Morrison award was presented at the field day of the Palouse Conservation Station. Pelter received a plaque and check for $500.

The award honors the memory of Kenneth J. Morrison who served as WSU Extension agronomist from 1950-1987.
