Federal Reserve Bank Symposium Nov. 16 at WSU
PULLMAN, Wash -- Representatives of the Federal Reserve Bank in San Francisco will discuss how the Federal Reserve works; challenges to the banking industry; current economic trends and risk; and monetary policy at a symposium scheduled from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, in Room T-101 of the Food Science and Human Nutrition Building.
During the symposium, students from Washington State University and the University of Idaho will participate in exercises that simulate monetary policy-making by the Federal Reserve Open Market Committee.
Based on their analysis of the latest economic and financial information, the students will discuss current economic conditions and monetary policy alternatives before casting their votes on the direction of interest rates.
"The Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco University Symposium, an educational program of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, is designed to educate students about the function of the Federal Reserve System using dynamic student involvement and participation," said Fred Inaba, associate professor of economic sciences.
Gary Zimmerman, an economist; Steve Fisher, a public affairs specialist; and Karen Safely, manager of Banking Supervision and Regulation, are coming from San Francisco to conduct the symposium.
The San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank, the WSU School of Economic Sciences, the Bank of Whitman, Washington Mutual and the Bank of America are sponsoring the event, which is free and open to the public.
