WSU to Host Screening of Documentary Oct. 4
PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University departments of crop and soil sciences and community and rural sociology will host a screening of the award-winning documentary "Argentina, Hope in Hard Times" at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4, in Johnson Hall 204.
In 2001, the Argentine economy collapsed, unemployment reached 40 percent, and the political establishment was discredited. This documentary tells how ordinary people turned to each other to resurrect their lives and revive the economy.
The film joins in processions and protests, attends street-corner meetings, and visits urban gardens and cooperatives where workers are restarting production in abandoned factories.
The film premiered in January 2005 at the Seattle Art Museum. It has since been shown at the San Diego Latino Film Festival, the Boston International Film Festival, the National Festival of Documentary Film and Video in Argentina and many other venues around the world. The film won the 2005 CINE Golden Eagle Award.
The film was produced by the Moving Images Film Project and directed by Mark Dworkin and Melissa Young. The two film makers will be on hand to talk about their film and answer questions.
