Organic Vegetable Pest Control Subject of Rochester Farm Walk

PUYALLUP, Wash. – Pest control on an organic diversified vegetable farm will be the topic of discussion for an upcoming farm walk and workshop at the Helsing Junction Farm near Rochester.

The farm walk will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 11, from noon until 3:30 p.m. The farm is located at 12013 Independence Road in Rochester. The cost is $10 for members of Tilth Producers and $15 for nonmembers. Participants are invited to bring a sack lunch. Beverages will be provided.

Helsing Junction Farm is an 18 year-old, 35-acre organic fruit, flower and herb farm serving 650 community-supported agriculture members in Seattle, Olympia and Portland.

Farmers Anna Salafsky and Susan Ijcic will share the history of their steadily growing farm business as well as their challenges in refining planting and seeding schedules and rotation for 75 different vegetables. They will also discuss their Food Bank CSA Farm Project and how they create opportunities for children to participate in harvesting food in the field and donating to families in need. Farmers will tour the fields while sharing their experience and discuss possible solutions for organically controlling the damaging pest Symphylans, also known as garden centipede.

More information about Helsing Junction Farm is available at www.helsingfarmcsa.com or by calling 360/273-2033.

Farm walks are cosponsored by the WSU Small Farms Program and Tilth Producers of Washington.
