Learn to Identify the Bugs of Spring
EVERETT, Wash. – Identifying both pests and beneficial insects as well as plant diseases and weeds that appear in western Washington in early spring will be the focus of a class offered by Washington State University Snohomish County Extension.
The two-hour class, part of WSU Extension’s four-class Bugs & Blights series, will feature a combination of lectures, laboratory time and field work.
The class will be offered at three different times on Wednesday, Mar. 26, at the WSU Snohomish County Extension office, 600 128th Street S.E. in Everett. The classes will begin at 10 am, 1 pm, and 6:30 pm.
The cost is $20 for the individual class, or $65 for the full four-class Bugs & Blights series. The cost for certified Master Gardeners is $10 per class, or $35 for the full series.

The class will cover identification of common bees and wasps, important as pollinators and predators, as well as how to detect early season pests and manage them before they take hold in the landscape. There will be several common and not-so-common weeds featured and the lab will focus on brown rot of cherries and other related species. Hands-on activities will include examining specimens of insects and diseases common on tender spring growth. Attendees are encouraged to bring samples for identification.
Sharon Collman, who leads the WSU Snohomish County Extension horticulture education program, and Snohomish County Extension entomologist Dave Pehling will be the instructors. Collman assists the nursery and landscape industries in Snohomish County with production, marketing and pest control. Pehling has been studying and teaching about insects for Snohomish County Extension since 1978.
