Workshops on Long Term Forest Practices Permits, Storm Damage Scheduled

CHELAN, Wash. – Washington State University Extension and the state Department of Natural Resources Small Forest Landowner Office have teamed up to offer two sets of workshops around the state for small forest landowners.

The first round of meetings will focus on educating the forestry community on DNR’s new program allowing applications for long-term forest practice permits valid for up to 15 years. The program is expected to ease the paperwork burden and allow more flexibility in timing harvests. However, DNR officials say the process for filing will be much different than applying for the standard two-year permit, which will continue to be available. The long-term application meetings will he held at the following locations:

Two educational workshops have been scheduled in southwest Washington for family forest owners who are dealing with the aftermath of December’s storms and flooding.

The first workshop will be held on Saturday, Feb. 23, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Raymond High School, 1016 Commercial Street, Raymond.

The second will be held on Saturday, Mar. 1, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Aberdeen High School, 410 North G Street, Aberdeen.

The workshops will cover a variety of topics including assessing your situation, wood-damaging organisms such as bark beetles and rot, realities of salvage harvesting, starting over, and a variety of regulatory and tax considerations.

The meetings and workshops are free and open to the public. Please contact Michael Ahr if you plan to attend or need additional information at Michael.ahr@dnr.wa.gov or 360-902-1849.
