Marketing and News Services has created a special section on the WSU Extension Web site to provide information to assist those in southwest Washington still coping with flood damage and power outages from last week’s storm. Jeff Mannix also has produced a series of informative radio public service announcements that have been distributed to S.W. Washington radio stations and are available at the Web site. We will continue adding information to the site.
The current edition of the Spokane Journal of Business reports that one of the top priorities of the economic development group, Greater Spokane Incorporated, for the coming legislative session is securing $3.9 million for a WSU faculty recruitment and retention pool.
The Tri-City Herald reported on the WSU Economic Issues and Outlook Conference on both Friday and Saturday. Capital Press, Columbia Basin Farmer and a free-lance reporter from Salem also covered the conference. Dennis also arranged five telephone interviews for conference speakers with Ag News Radio.
Wednesday’s Seattle Times Snohomish County edition and Thursday’s general editions included coverage of the WSU cosponsored Focus on Farming conference in Lynnwood, and quoted from Chad Kruger’s presentation.
Monday’s Yakima Herald-Republic included an editorial expressing concern over how a proposed change to federal wine labeling regulations could adversely impact small wineries.
Monday’s Tri-City Herald reported that the Port of Benton has received a $50,000 state grant for planning and a feasibility study for the port’s Richland Industrial Center. The center is part of the Tri-Cities Research District in which WSU is a partner.
Cindy Wills with the WSU Extension Energy Program’s Energy Ideas Clearinghouse is quoted in a story on the environmental benefits of using LED holiday lights in last Saturday’s Columbus Dispatch (Ohio).
The Energy Ideas Clearinghouse information on LED Christmas lights is also cited in a story in Thursday’s Lufkin Daily News (Texas) on the newspapers decision to switch to LED holiday lighting.
Extension’s Mike Bush is briefly quoted in a Yakima Herald-Republic story from last Sunday about the efforts of a couple to protect and grow a palm tree in Zillah.
In this week’s Capital Press: Grays Harbor Extension’s Don Tapio is quoted in a story in the impacts of last week’s flooding on southwest Washington farmers, including the impacts to his own farm; coverage of the WSU cosponsored Focus on Farming conference in Lynnwood; Grant County Extension’s Karen Lewis’s remarks to the State Horticultural Association are quoted in a story on the farm labor situation; Matt Whiting’s research is mentioned in a story on research to develop new sweet cherry cultivars; and Extension livestock advisor David Ridle is quoted in a story on the benefits of small scale pig farming.
