John Reganold is quoted in a Tuesday Seattle Post-Intelligencer front-page story on the loss of topsoil and the benefits of direct seeding in controlling erosion.
The Associated Press reported on Thursday that the U.S. Dept. of Energy has canceled plans to accept bids for the contract to manage the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland. Last month Batelle announced it would partner with WSU, UW, and Babcock and Wilcox to bid for the contract.
Sunday’s Daily Olympian included a story promoting a free workshop series on 4-H being offered by Thurston County Extension.
Wednesday’s Snohomish County edition of the Seattle Times included a story on the 4-H Salmon Stewards program started by WSU Snohomish County Extension and Snohomish County.
Western Farmer-Stockman included a story on WSU’s potential leadership role in bioenergy development based on a news release about John Gardner’s address at the recent Economic Outlook and Issues conference in Tri-Cities.
A story in Saturday’s Vancouver Columbian on a traveling art exhibition focusing on the American farm mentions that the Clark County panels profiling six area farms were created by Clark County Extension’s Doug Steinbarger and Erin Harwood.
Stories in the Latah Eagle (Idaho) and the East Oregonian (Pendleton) on the Idaho Oilseed Conference to be held in Moscow in late February mention that WSU plant pathologist Scot Hulbert will be among the featured speakers.
In this week’s Capital Press: A report on the January Washington Wheat Commission meeting mentions that topics discussed included providing $2 million in funding for an endowed chair in agricultural economics and an investment in a double haploid lab to speed the breeding process for Kulvinder Gill; a story on research at the IAREC to find more efficient and effective ways to thin fruit tree blossoms; a report on the recent WSU organized Country Living Expo and Cattlemen’s Winter School held in Stanwood that drew more than 500 people (planners anticipated 200); and a story on IBC’s Mark Lange’s proposal to research using transgenics to generate pharmaceuticals using peppermint.
